On Tuesday 28th March, Tom Palmer: author of book series, including ‘Football Academy’, ‘Foul Play’ and ‘Take to the Skies’, visited our school. Tom provided two reading workshops for KS3/4 and for KS2. These involved interactive reading activities and question and answer sessions, as well as the highlight for most of our pupils: a football ‘reading based’ penalty shoot-out!
A number of our pupils have been studying one of Tom’s books, ‘Over the Line’ about a young footballer on the edge of his professional career who is called off to fight in the First World War. They all enjoyed meeting a real-life author and ask lots of interesting questions. As a result of one of these questions, Tom agreed to create a number of short video clips which he is going to put on his web-site, to inspire, guide and support our students with the process of drafting their writing. Tom also made time during his visit to judge the finalists of this year’s Longdon Creative Writing Competition (congratulations Dyllon and Bradley!)
Pupils are keen to stay in touch with Tom through his website and many have made requests, since his visit, to have a selection of his books available for them to try in our school library – great result!
